Dr. Joseph Schlessinger was born in Yugoslavia (now the area that is called Croatia). When he was a very young boy his parents immigrated to Israel. He stayed there for two decades, and then, after finishing his Ph.D., he moved to the US in order to do a post-doctrate. Four years later Joseph Schlessinger moved back to Israel and served as a Professor in the Weizmann Institute of Science, but several years later he moved back to the US, this time to chair the prestigious department of pharmacology at New York University.
When asked whether these frequent movings back and forth across the ocean bother him, Schlessinger responded: “my job is my life. I go where it takes me.”
